Outdoor Speedlight Portraits: Ep. 201: Digital Photography 1 on 1

This is the first episode of Season Two and that’s why the numbers have changed from episode 75 to 201. There are no “missing” episodes between 75 and 201. In this episode Mark shows you how you can control your speed light for some creative exposure options when shooting outside.

This week Mark explains six traditional lighting styles: broad, short, loop, closed loop, Rembrandt and butterfly lighting.

Not? that I am surprised because they are always over looked, but Sony Alpha camera’s also have both exposure and flash compensation settings. Other than that, not a bad video, but I still prefer to use my flash in manual mode too.

@pjos111 the only logical explanation could be the increasing of both exposures? (flash/aperture and ambient light/shutter speed)

it really doesn’t matter what you set your camera to,? plus or minus compensation, with or without flash, Jade (or is it Jay?) looks fantastic :)

@tmelo1968 You can shoot with a higher shutter speed by? selecting Auto FP in flash control menu on a Nikon or pressing the H button on a Canon Flash. This uses up a lot of available flash power, so don’t expect your flash to reach very far.

@thargor2k I have to agree with this. At 11:46 on the video the foreground exposure looks changed in line with the exposure compensation.? I

Question, how did you shoot with a shutter speed higher than your sync speed and still get the photo? Probably a? dumb question but I dont get it. Thanks

On Nikon? you can shoot in aperture priority and do the flash exposure compensation on the flash itself. I have a SB700 and the exposure comp is the first thing on the menu, it’s easy to change.

Hi Mark ,just wondering if you could settle a debate,I have a Canon EOS 550,one teacher told me to turn? off AF and image stabiliser while using manual mode in the studio as it will damage the motor, whilst my other teacher says he’s never heard of that, and insists its ok to use the camera in manual mode with those settings on,would like your advice as don’t want to damage my camera ,thanks Lesley

The Butterfly light used with small softbox and reflector look the most flattering i think, but thats just personal? taste. You say Butterfly lighting is best used for beauty and head shots, is it not possible to use it for full length standing poses?

Great tutorial, thanks for making it and sharing your expertise =o)

@FloppyHatPhotos Try Model? Mayhem (google it). You can start by shooting TFP (Time For Print) or TFCD (Time for CD). You get time from the model, the model gets prints or a CD. Helps both of you build your portfolio and nobody has to spend money.
